What our OT says?

• Letter Recognition: Alphabet cards display individual letters in a clear and visually appealing format. Children can see and identify letters in lowercase. This helps them recognise and differentiate between different letters of the alphabet.
• Phonemic Awareness:  Use alphabet cards to introduce phonemic awareness. By associating the visual representation of a letter with its corresponding sound, children learn the basics of phonics. For example, showing the letter “B” alongside the picture and saying the word, helps reinforce the connection between the letter and its initial sound.
• Visual Discrimination: Alphabet cards come in various fonts, colours, and styles. Children practice visual discrimination by identifying the same letter across different formats. This skill is essential for reading and writing.
• Sequencing and Order: Alphabet cards allow you to teach the order of letters to make words.  Children learn that the order of letters form a word and if you change the order then you change the word.
• Fine Motor Skills: Manipulating alphabet cards involves fine motor skills. Children pick up, arrange, and organize the cards, enhancing their hand-eye coordination and dexterity.
• Vocabulary Building: Beyond letter recognition, alphabet cards can feature corresponding images (e.g., “A” for “apple”). Associating letters with familiar words expands a child’s vocabulary.
• Interactive Learning: Engage children in interactive activities using alphabet cards. These activities include matching letters, spelling simple words, and creating short sentences.
• Memory and Recall: Repeated exposure to alphabet cards helps children memorise letter shapes and sounds. It reinforces memory recall when they encounter these letters in other contexts (e.g., books, signs).
• Multi-sensory Approach: Incorporate multi-sensory techniques by combining visual, auditory, and kinesthetics elements. Alphabet cards can be used alongside songs, rhymes, and tactile materials (e.g., sandpaper letters).
