Sensory Compression Vest

Some children feel calmer when they’re held firmly. A big hug, a snug blanket or a tight squeeze can help a busy body settle. This Sensory Compression Vest gives that same firm, even pressure in a form a child can wear through the day. It hugs the shoulders, chest and tummy without adding any weight.

The vest is made of a stretchy, breathable fabric that wraps closely around the torso. Hook-and-loop fastenings let you adjust how firm the pressure feels, so you can find what is comfortable for your child. It is low-profile and flexible, so it can be worn under a school shirt or over a T-shirt. Children can still run, climb, sit and play freely while wearing it.

We stock this vest because many families and therapists find deep pressure a helpful, gentle tool for regulation. It isn’t a fix or a cure. It is one more way to help a child feel more comfortable in their body during busy, loud or overwhelming moments. Every child responds differently, and that’s okay.

What the OT Says

As an occupational therapist, I often see children whose nervous systems are working very hard to process everything around them. For some, the noise, movement and demands of a classroom or busy shop can feel like too much. Deep pressure gives the body proprioceptive input, which is information from the muscles and joints about where the body is in space. For many children this input is organising and calming. It is the same reason firm hugs, heavy blankets or squeezing into a beanbag help some children settle.

A compression vest delivers that input steadily and evenly across the trunk, without needing an adult to provide it. The adjustable fastening matters therapeutically. Children differ widely in how much pressure they find comforting, and some sensory-sensitive children find firm pressure uncomfortable rather than calming. Starting gently and adjusting gradually lets you watch how your child responds. Because the vest uses compression instead of weight, it doesn’t add load to the shoulders or affect posture and movement. Children can wear it while moving, writing at a desk or playing.

I’d encourage families to use the vest purposefully, not all day. Try it during times your child tends to find hard, such as transitions, busy outings, homework or settling after school. Use short wear periods with breaks, and watch your child’s cues. The vest should never feel restrictive or uncomfortable, and it shouldn’t be worn to sleep. Research on compression garments is mixed. Some children show clear benefits in sensory regulation, attention and emotional regulation, and others show little change. The best guide is your own child.

I recommend this vest for home and clinical use, ideally as part of a wider sensory plan. If you’re unsure whether it suits your child, an OT can help you work out how and when to use it.
