Stacking Sea Friends Bath Toys

Meet four gentle sea friends: a bumpy pufferfish, a whiskered seal, a sleepy-eyed penguin and a little crab. Each one is moulded in soft, matte material in a calm, muted colour (mustard, sage, warm grey and dusty rose). Each has its own shape and surface to explore, from the raised bumps on the pufferfish to the sculpted legs and claws of the crab.

The animals stack neatly into a little tower, which babies love to knock down and toddlers enjoy building up again. Each one has a small hole, so in the bath it can be filled with water and squeezed to make a gentle squirt. They can be stacked, lined up along the edge of the bath, used to pour and splash, or brought into stories about the sea. There’s no single right way to play with them.

Their soft colours and simple, friendly faces make them a lovely addition to the bathroom and a thoughtful baby shower or first-birthday gift.

What the OT Says

When I choose bath toys, I look for ones that give children more to explore than something that simply floats. Warm water already offers calming sensory input, and these add touch on top of it. Each animal has a different surface: the bumps on the pufferfish, the smooth seal, the ridged legs of the crab. That gives babies and toddlers varied tactile information to explore with their hands. For children who are cautious with new textures, the bath can be a relaxed, low-pressure place to meet them.

Squeezing water in and out builds hand strength. A younger baby will use a whole-hand squeeze, while an older toddler starts to use the fingers and thumb with more control to aim the squirt. That repeated squeeze-and-release supports the grip strength and hand control children later need for feeding themselves, using scissors and holding a crayon. Aiming at a cup or the side of the bath adds hand-eye coordination and a satisfying sense of cause and effect.

Stacking brings in visual-spatial skills and problem-solving. Lining up one rounded animal on top of another means judging orientation and balance and adjusting when the tower wobbles. Steadying the base with one hand while placing a piece with the other supports bilateral coordination. Naming the animals, colours and actions (“squeeze,” “on top,” “splash”) builds early language, and taking turns with a sibling or caregiver supports social-emotional skills.

A practical tip: after bath time, squeeze out the water and let the toys dry fully. I’d recommend these for home bath time, and they also suit water-play or sensory sessions in a clinical setting.
