What our OT says:

Pretend play is a fantastic way for children to learn and develop essential skills while having fun.  Here are our take on pretend play and the importance thereof.

• Cognitive Development: Pretend play allows children to engage in imaginative scenarios, acting out stories and manipulating ideas and emotions. This type of play enhances language usage, including subjunctives, future tenses, and adjectives. Additionally, it fosters the concept of “theory of mind,” which is an awareness that our thoughts may differ from those of others and that multiple perspectives exist.
• Emotional Expression and Regulation: Through pretend play, children can express both positive and negative feelings. It provides a safe space for them to explore emotions, modulate affect, and integrate emotion with cognition.
• Social Skills: Taking on different roles during pretend play helps children learn essential social skills such as communication, problem-solving, and empathy. When they use toys to introduce scenarios or friends, they naturally represent multiple perspectives.
• Creativity and Cognitive Flexibility: Early imaginative play enhances cognitive flexibility and creativity.
• Self-Regulation: Make-believe games are forerunners of self-regulation skills, including reduced aggression, delayed gratification, civility, and empathy.
