Wooden Egg

A plain wooden egg is one of the simplest, most satisfying craft bases you can hand a child, smooth, solid, and completely ready for their own ideas. Our Wooden Eggs are unfinished and unpainted, sized just right for little hands to hold and decorate, whether that means painting them in bright Easter colours, wrapping them in wool or fabric scraps, decorating with markers, or gluing on sequins, feathers, and other loose parts for a fully personalised creation.

Beyond craft time, these solid wooden eggs are just as at home in open-ended loose parts play, tucked into a sensory bin, hidden for an Easter egg hunt, or used alongside wooden food and nesting sets for imaginative kitchen play. Sold individually, they're an easy, affordable way to build up a stash for a classroom craft table, a family Easter tradition, or a rainy-day activity box.

Simple, natural, and endlessly reusable, this is exactly the kind of screen-free, open-ended material we love stocking, a blank canvas that turns into whatever a child imagines, and a lovely seasonal craft staple for years to come.

What the OT Says:

Craft activities built around a simple wooden base like this offer some of the richest, most flexible therapeutic value I work with, because the child directs the entire process. Deciding how to decorate the egg, choosing colours, planning a pattern, holding the paintbrush or marker with a controlled grip, all of this builds fine motor control and hand-eye coordination in a genuinely engaging, low-pressure way.

Painting or wrapping a curved wooden surface is also a lovely bilateral coordination task, one hand steadies and rotates the egg while the other applies paint, glue, or thread, asking both hands to work together toward a shared goal. For children still building hand strength and control, that steadying, rotating motion is quietly valuable practice, more so than decorating a flat surface would be.

Beyond the physical skills, open-ended craft work like this supports planning and executive function, a child has to think through their design before and while they create it, and problem solving in real time as materials behave differently than expected. It's also a wonderful activity for building creative confidence, there's no wrong way to decorate a wooden egg, which makes it a safe space for a child to experiment and take pride in a finished piece entirely their own.

I recommend keeping a small stash of these on hand for craft afternoons, Easter activities, or a calming, creative task in a therapy setting, they're simple, inexpensive, and consistently rewarding for children to work with.
