Balance Scale

This Wooden Balance Scale is an innovative mathematics tool designed to cultivate children's learning through play. It features a naturally-crafted wooden structure that is perfect for demonstrating mathematical concepts such as measurement, balance, and equations. As kids have fun, they'll gain a greater understanding of essential mathematical skills.

Features:

• Measures:  30 cm x 12 cm x 17 cm
• Balance scale and 5 wooden weights
• Material: Natural Beechwood

The benefits of using a balance scale:

Using a Balance scale  is an excellent way to develop basic math skills, especially when focusing on tactile and visual support for abstract mathematical concepts. Let’s explore why scales are important in mathematics:

• Comparison and Measurement:
  • • A scale helps us compare and measure the weight of different objects.
    • By placing objects on either side of the scale, children can directly observe which one is heavier or lighter.
    • This hands-on experience fosters an understanding of relative weight and introduces the concept of equality (when both sides of the scale balance).
• Tactile Learning:
  • • When children physically place objects on a scale, they engage their sense of touch.
    • The tactile experience reinforces the idea that weight can be quantified and compared.
    • For visually impaired students, tactile exploration is crucial for understanding mathematical concepts.

• Visual Representation:
  • • • Scales provide a visual representation of equality.
      • When both sides of the scale are balanced, it visually demonstrates that the weights are equal.
      • This visual feedback reinforces the abstract concept of balance and equivalence.
•

• Mathematical Logic:

  • • Teaching concepts such as balance, weight measurement, and equivalences using scales lays the foundation for mathematical logic.
    • Children learn to reason about quantities, compare magnitudes, and understand the relationships between different weights.

• Hands-On Exploration:
  • • Exploring real objects on a scale allows children to practice counting, arranging items, and making comparisons.
    • It prepares them for more advanced mathematical skills, such as addition and subtraction.

• Conceptual Understanding:
  • • Scales help children grasp the qualities of objects (e.g., woodenness of a wooden spoon, metalness of a metal object).
    • They learn to categorise, sort, and classify based on attributes like shape, texture, and weight.
•  STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics):
  • • Balance scales allow children to measure and compare the weight of different objects. They learn about units of measurement (grams, kilograms, ounces, etc.) and explore concepts like mass and weight.
    • Children observe how the balance scale responds to gravity. They learn about equilibrium, center of mass, and how forces act on objects.
    • Operating a balance scale introduces students to basic technology.
    • Lots of problem-solving, balancing objects on a scale involves engineering principles. Children troubleshoot imbalances and adjust weights to achieve equilibrium.
