Montessori Peg Play

The Montessori Peg Play is a simple, beautifully practical activity: ten colourful metal pegs and a wooden board with four upright rails. Your child pinches each peg open and clips it onto a rail. Then they squeeze it again to take it off. The pegs are made of coiled metal wire, so they have a real spring and give gentle resistance. Little hands have to work a bit to open them, and that small effort is where much of the value lies.

The four rails are evenly spaced and all the same height, which gives children a clear, simple space to work in. They might sort the pegs by colour, fill one rail at a time, copy a pattern you’ve made, or count the pegs on and off. There are five colours, two pegs of each: terracotta, lime, forest green, blue and lilac. That makes matching and pairing a natural part of play. The board is compact and sturdy, so it suits a shelf, a travel bag or a quiet table activity.

It’s a small toy that does a lot. It has no batteries and no screens, and it doesn’t need to be played one right way. It’s just a calm, focused task that children tend to come back to again and again as their hands grow stronger and more skilled.

What’s Included

• 1 × wooden peg board with 4 evenly spaced upright rails (17 × 9 × 6 cm)
• 10 × metal wire spring pegs, in 5 colours (2 each of terracotta, lime, forest green, blue and lilac)

Total: 11 pieces
Recommended age: 3 years+ (adult supervision recommended, because the pegs are small metal parts)

What the OT Says

As an occupational therapist, I use pegs in therapy all the time. This set is a step up from the usual wooden pegs because of the resistance. To open a metal spring peg, a child has to use a controlled pinch, usually between the thumb pad and the index finger, or the thumb, index and middle fingers together. This works the small muscles inside the hand and helps build the open, rounded web space between thumb and index finger. Those same foundations later support a mature pencil grasp, using scissors, doing up buttons and many other everyday self-care tasks.

The springy resistance also gives the hand and fingers useful proprioceptive feedback. Children feel how hard they need to squeeze, and they learn to grade their force: squeeze firmly enough to open the peg, then release with control so it lands where they want it. The squeeze-and-release action is very similar to the open-close motion of cutting with scissors. For that reason I often suggest peg activities before, or alongside, early scissor skills.

The board adds another layer. A child has to steady it with one hand while placing pegs with the other, which supports bilateral coordination. Lining a peg up with a narrow edge and clipping it in place takes hand-eye coordination and visual perceptual skills. The closely spaced rails also encourage careful, controlled movements, because the fingers have to work in a small space. Depending on how you use it, the pairs of colours can also support colour matching, sorting, counting, patterning and sequencing. If you ask your child to copy a simple pattern, they also practise working memory, attention and planning, all early executive function skills.

What I love most is that it’s a short, achievable task with a clear finish. Children get a real sense of “I did it”, and that builds both confidence and focus. It doesn’t feel like therapy to the child, even though a lot of skill-building is happening. I’d happily recommend it for home, the classroom or a therapy room.
