Stacking Castle

Some of the best developmental toys don't look like "toys" at all they look like soft, colourful cups your little one wants to pick up, chew on, and stack all over again. Our Stacking Castle is exactly that kind of toy: a set of nesting silicone cups, made from 100% food-grade, BPA-free silicone, designed for little hands and even littler gums.

Each cup nests inside the next for tidy storage, and stacks up into a wobbly little tower for the more determined stacker. One cup includes a small door, so once the stacking phase gives way to imaginative play, the set can just as easily become a fantasy castle for tiny toys and figures to live in. It's soft enough to go straight from the bath to the teething basket to the play mat, and simple enough to wash with soap and water or sterilise in boiling water or the dishwasher.

We chose this piece because it grows with a child rather than being outgrown by them what starts as a teething and stacking toy for a baby becomes an open-ended small-world castle for an older toddler. It's a small, well-made object with a lot of play left in it, which is exactly the kind of value we look for at Tiny Tree Toys.

What the OT Says:

I love recommending toys like this one because they work on so many levels at once, without ever feeling like "work" for the child. From a fine motor perspective, picking up, releasing, and orienting each cup to fit inside or on top of the next asks a baby to refine their grasp — moving from a whole-hand palmar grasp toward a more controlled grip as they figure out how to position each piece. That repeated pick-up-and-place action is one of the simplest, most effective ways to build the hand strength and dexterity that later supports things like holding a spoon or a crayon.

The stacking and nesting action also asks for early visual-spatial reasoning — the child has to judge size, depth, and orientation to work out which cup goes where, and adjust when a cup doesn't quite fit. Because the set can be stacked in more than one order, there's a built-in element of trial and error: the child experiments, sees what happens, and tries again. That kind of low-stakes problem-solving is exactly how young children build early cognitive flexibility, well before they can do it with words.

The silicone material itself matters therapeutically, too. For babies who are teething, safe chewing on a textured, food-grade surface offers organising oral-sensory input, which can be genuinely soothing during a stage that's often uncomfortable. And because the cups work equally well in the bath, on the floor, or as an on-the-go toy, they offer a consistent sensory experience across different contexts and settings, which is useful for a baby who's still learning what to expect from new textures and materials.

As the child grows past pure stacking, the little door on one cup opens the door, quite literally, to early pretend play: post-boxing small objects in and out, "hiding" figures inside, or building the first version of a small-world scene. This is a lovely toy for home, and it also travels well as a portable option for the therapy bag, thanks to its light weight and easy-clean surface.
