Ishizaki Kenzan is a company located in Sanjo, Niigata Prefecture, that specialises in making kenzan and accessories required for ikebana and bonsai. Sanjo has been known since the 17th century for the delicate metalwork skills of their artisans and blacksmiths.
A Kenzan (also referred to as a pin frog or spiky frog) is a specific device used in the Japanese art of flower arrangement, Ikebana, for fixing the flowers in the container. The name kenzan (剣山) literally means sword mountain in Japanese and was introduced by the Moribana styIe.
Kenzan consists of a heavy stainless steel (or Brass) plate to prevent tipping, with erected brass needles where the stalks are fixed. The Kenzan also usually has a non-slip protective rubber ring/surround (except the small black kenzan).
A kenzan is an essential tool for any modern flower arranger, designer, or florist.
