This iconic landmark was built in 1848 and the first light was lit on 1 March 1849. Originally, the lamp was fueled by the tail fat of sheep, but was replaced by an oil-burning lantern in 1905. After that, off course it progressed to an electric lamp eventually. The lighthouse did fall into disrepair for a while, but was restored and declared as a national monument and a heritage site in 1973.
This is a stunning place to visit on the southern most tip of Africa. You can climb to the top of the 27 meter tower and enjoy a breathtaking 360 degree view. There is also a lovely walkway along the beach, which has been built, allowing you to enjoy the beauty of the beach and to see the lighthouse from various different angles.
