Silicone Turtle Stepping Stones (3pc)

These sweet silicone sea turtles turn any floor into a little ocean path. Each turtle is covered in raised details to feel underfoot: smooth round domes, stars, pyramid shapes and scaly flippers. Laid out in a row, a circle or a winding trail, they invite children to step, balance, hop and explore, ideally with bare feet so they can really feel the textures.

Because they're soft, flexible silicone, the turtles are gentle on feet and easy to move around. You can set up a sensory path in the passage, an obstacle course in the garden or a "cross the ocean" game in the living room. Children can also explore them with their hands, sort them by colour or use them as markers in their own made-up games.

We chose these turtles because they get children moving while also giving their feet and hands rich sensory feedback. That combination is valuable, and surprisingly hard to find in such a simple toy. They're a lovely addition to a home play space, classroom or therapy room.

What the OT Says:

Our feet are full of sensory receptors, yet children today spend much of their time in shoes, on flat, uniform surfaces. Walking barefoot over different textures gives the feet rich tactile input and helps build body awareness, so children know where their feet are and how they're placed. The domes, stars, ridges and scales on these turtles each feel slightly different. Children who are sensitive to textures can explore them gradually and on their own terms, while children who seek sensory input often love the extra feedback.

Stepping from one turtle to the next is also a great balance and gross motor activity. Each step asks a child to shift their weight, stand briefly on one leg and adjust to a surface that gives slightly underfoot. This supports balance, postural control and coordination, and it provides proprioceptive input through the joints and muscles. Spacing the turtles further apart adds hopping and jumping, which builds strength and motor planning.

I also like how much thinking these turtles invite. Setting up a path, deciding which turtle to step on next or following a colour sequence ("step only on the pink and yellow") brings in sequencing, working memory and following instructions. Taking turns on the path with a sibling or friend adds social skills such as waiting, cheering each other on and sharing ideas for new games.

There's no one right way to use them. Every child will find their own games, and that's what keeps them coming back. I recommend them for home sensory paths and movement breaks, for classrooms and for therapy sessions. As with any stepping toy, use them on a dry, flat, non-slip surface with supervision.
