Little Dutch - Vehicle Set

The Little Dutch Vehicle Set brings 10 wooden vehicles to the playroom floor, from emergency responders to delivery trucks. Each one has smooth rubber wheels, so it glides across a play mat, a wooden floor or a Little Dutch railway track. Send the fire truck to the rescue, let the police patrol, or deliver something important across town.

The vehicles are simple and sturdy, with no lights, sounds or batteries, so the stories come from your child. They're made from FSC-certified wood with water-based paint. They're designed to run on Little Dutch railway track, but track isn't included, so they work just as well on their own or alongside blocks, small-world figures and whatever else your child builds.

It belongs in an OT-curated shop because vehicles like these invite the kind of play that grows with a child. A younger child might simply enjoy pushing and lining them up, while an older one starts to build whole stories with jobs, problems and helpers.

What the OT Says:

As an occupational therapist, I love a good vehicle set because so much happens while a child is "just" driving cars. Picking up and pushing small vehicles encourages a controlled grasp, and the smooth rubber wheels teach children to grade their force: push too hard and the vehicle shoots off, too softly and it barely moves. Lining vehicles up, loading them and fitting them onto a track all build hand-eye coordination, visual perceptual skills and the fine motor control that later supports drawing and writing.

The movement matters too. Vehicles drive across the floor, and children often follow them with their eyes and hands, crossing the midline of the body as they go. Playing on the floor also gives lovely postural practice through kneeling, crawling and reaching. When a child holds one vehicle steady while another drives past it, that's bilateral coordination at work, and fitting a vehicle onto a track asks for careful visual attention and precision.

This kind of play is also very rich for thinking and language. A child who decides the fire truck must reach the emergency first is planning, sequencing and holding a story in mind, which supports working memory and early executive function. Sorting vehicles by type or job builds categorising skills, and words like "next to", "behind" and "under" come up naturally. Because the vehicles represent community helpers, role-play often becomes a way to explore caring, problem-solving and taking turns, which supports social-emotional learning, especially when two children play together.

Every child will play differently, and some will happily spend the whole session lining vehicles up. That's all valid play. The set has small parts, so it's best for children aged 3 and up, with supervision. I'd recommend it for home play and for use in therapy sessions working on pretend play, fine motor control and early storytelling.
