Wooden Pincer Peg Board

This simple wooden peg board is made for small fingers. Nine smooth wooden pegs each fit into one of nine holes, set inside a printed 3x3 grid on a natural wood board. Children pinch a peg, lift it, line it up and press it into place. It’s a quiet, focused kind of play that young children often come back to on their own.

The grid gives the board more than one way to play. Children can fill it peg by peg, take every peg out again, or copy simple patterns: a row, a corner, a diagonal. The challenge grows with them. They can try it faster, slower, or with their other hand.

The board is uncoloured, unfussy and calm to look at, so nothing on it competes for your child’s attention. It’s compact and durable, and it suits a playroom shelf, a therapy bag or a quiet moment at the table equally well.

What the OT Says

As an occupational therapist, I often reach for peg boards because they work on the pincer grasp so directly. This is the precise thumb-to-index-finger grip children later use for buttons, zips, small food pieces and, eventually, a pencil. Each peg needs a neat fingertip grip to lift and a controlled push to seat, so children practise grasp and precision release in the same movement.

Because every peg is the same, there’s nothing to sort and nothing to distract from the movement itself. That makes it a clean, focused fine motor task. Lining each peg up with its hole can support hand-eye coordination. Steadying the board with one hand while placing with the other supports bilateral coordination. Holding several pegs in the palm and moving them one at a time to the fingertips builds in-hand manipulation, an important skill that’s easy to overlook.

The printed grid adds a thinking layer when you want one. Copying a pattern you’ve made, such as “fill the top row” or “make an L shape”, asks children to look, plan and hold the pattern in mind. That can support visual perception, motor planning and working memory. You can make it easier or harder simply by changing what you ask. Children can also play with tongs, with the non-dominant hand, or against a timer.

I’d recommend it for home play and as a compact fine motor tool for therapists and classrooms. Every child will use it a little differently, and that’s what makes it worth having.
