Long before a child writes a number confidently on paper, their fingers can learn its shape by touch, and that's exactly what our Sandpaper Numbers are designed for. Ten textured numerals, 0 through 9, are mounted on smooth green boards and presented together in a wooden storage box, ready for little fingers to trace the correct shape of each number, stroke by stroke, well before formal writing begins.

The gentle grit of the sandpaper gives immediate, tangible feedback as a child traces each numeral with their fingertip, a sensory cue that reinforces the correct direction and shape far more effectively than looking at a printed number alone. It's a beautifully simple Montessori-style material, quiet, focused, and designed to build genuine number recognition through touch rather than repetition or memorisation.

Presented in a tidy wooden box for easy storage, this set is a lovely addition to any early numeracy collection, at home, in a classroom, or in a therapy setting, and pairs naturally with our Sandpaper Letters for a full pre-writing readiness toolkit.

What's Included:

10 x Sandpaper numerals (0–9), mounted on green boards

1 x Wooden storage box

Total: 11 pieces | Recommended age: 3+

Tile dimensions: 2.8 x 3.5 x 0.1 inches (approx. 7 x 9 x 0.3 cm)

What the OT Says:

Sandpaper numerals are one of the most effective early numeracy tools I use, precisely because they teach through touch rather than sight alone. When a child traces a textured numeral with their fingertip, they're building a physical, muscle memory of that number's shape, which research consistently shows supports stronger, more accurate numeral recognition than visual learning by itself.

This tracing motion also lays down the exact motor pattern a child will later use to write that number with a pencil. Following the correct starting point and direction with a finger first means that by the time a child picks up a pencil, the movement already feels familiar, this significantly reduces the reversals and incorrect formations I often see in children who go straight to paper without this tactile groundwork.

There's a sensory processing benefit here too. The textured surface provides clear, consistent tactile feedback, which is genuinely calming and organising for children who benefit from tactile input, and it naturally slows a child down, encouraging focused attention rather than a rushed glance at a printed page. Working through the numbers in sequence also supports early number sense and order, one to ten, one board at a time.

I recommend this as a foundational early numeracy tool for home or a therapy setting, it's simple, genuinely evidence-based, and builds real pre-writing readiness through touch.
