Montessori Coin Box

Some of the most meaningful early play is also the simplest. This wooden coin box invites your little one to post a coin through the slot, watch it disappear, then pull open the drawer to find it waiting. It is a small moment of discovery that babies and toddlers love to repeat again and again.

The box is made from smooth, natural wood. It has a chunky round knob that is easy for small hands to grasp. The coins come in soft, earthy tones of terracotta, apricot, peach and pale blue. They are large and flat, so they are comfortable to hold and line up with the slot. Coins drop straight into the drawer instead of rolling away. This keeps play calm and contained, and it lets your child work through the whole sequence on their own.

Coin boxes are a classic in Montessori and early-years settings because they meet children where they are. A younger baby may simply open and close the drawer. An older toddler will carefully post every coin and retrieve them all. Later, the coins can be sorted by colour, counted, or brought into pretend shop play. It is a beautiful, purposeful toy that grows with your child.

What the OT Says

When I choose toys for babies and toddlers, I look for ones that give a child a clear, achievable challenge with a satisfying result. The coin box does exactly that. It is one of my favourite tools for supporting object permanence, which is the understanding that something still exists when you can no longer see it. Each time a coin vanishes through the slot and reappears in the drawer, the child gets a gentle, repeatable lesson in cause and effect. That builds the early foundations of memory and anticipation.

The coin slot asks a lot of a young child’s hands and eyes, in the best way. To post a coin, the child needs to hold it between the thumb and fingers. They also need to rotate their wrist so the coin lines up with the narrow opening, and then release it with control. This can support the development of a refined grasp, wrist control and hand-eye coordination. These same skills later contribute to self-feeding, managing buttons and holding a crayon. The thin edge of the coin gives clear sensory feedback. The child feels when the alignment is right.

The drawer adds a second layer. Pulling the knob uses a different grip and a different kind of strength than posting the coin. Many children naturally steady the box with one hand while pulling with the other, which encourages early bilateral coordination. Following the full sequence of post, open, find and close also gently stretches attention, working memory and early planning. These are building blocks of executive function.

What I love most is that this toy lets children feel capable. There is no single right way to play with it. Each child can approach it at their own level, and every success is visible and immediate. It also invites lovely language moments: “in,” “gone,” “open,” “there it is!” I’d happily recommend it for home play as well as for use in a therapy or early-learning setting.
