Ball Swirl Lids for Stepping Stones

Turn your stepping stones into a brand-new hand-eye coordination challenge. Place a wooden lid on top of a stone, drop in a ball, and tilt and swirl the lid carefully until the ball rolls into the hole. Each pack has three lids in different sizes, so the game gets harder as your child’s control improves.

Children can play alone and enjoy the quiet focus it takes, or race a friend to see whose ball drops first. It is a playful way to bring movement, balance and fine motor control together, with a little friendly competition.

The lids come in warm or cool colourways and fit our stepping stones, which are sold separately.

What the OT Says

This game asks for very finely graded movement. To roll the ball into the hole, a child has to make small, controlled movements of the wrist and forearm while keeping their eyes on the ball. If they tilt too much, the ball rushes past; if they tilt too little, nothing happens. That supports hand-eye coordination, grading of force, wrist stability and fine motor control, which are the same skills that later support handwriting and using tools.

Holding the lid steady takes two hands working together, so it is also good bilateral coordination practice. When a child sits on a stone while they play, or holds the lid and stone together, it becomes a whole-body challenge: the core stays stable so the hands can move precisely. I love activities like this because they show a child how stability and control work together.

The three lid sizes let me grade the challenge, and they also make it easier for children to experience success first and then try something harder. The game builds sustained attention and patience, and racing a friend adds turn-taking, coping with losing a round and trying again.

I recommend these for home, classroom and therapy use, especially for children who enjoy a focused challenge.
