A beautiful expression of traditional Japanese craftsmanship, the Misuzi Banko-yaki Rice Pot brings together centuries-old pottery techniques and the simple pleasure of perfectly cooked rice. Crafted in Japan, this elegant ceramic pot is designed to produce beautifully fluffy, evenly cooked rice while preserving the natural sweetness, aroma and texture of each grain.
Made using traditional Banko-yaki pottery techniques from Mie Prefecture, Japan, the pot is celebrated for its exceptional heat resistance and gentle, even heat distribution. Its thick ceramic walls retain warmth beautifully, allowing rice to cook steadily and rest naturally, resulting in a delicate texture and rich, satisfying flavour.
With its understated form and earthy ceramic finish, the Misuzi rice pot embodies the Japanese philosophy of finding beauty in everyday objects. Equally at home in the kitchen or presented directly at the dining table, it transforms the preparation of rice into a considered daily ritual.
Features & Benefits
Traditional Banko-yaki Ceramic: Crafted from heat-resistant Japanese pottery clay, renowned for its durability and excellent thermal properties.
Beautifully Cooked Rice: Gentle, consistent heat helps create fluffy, tender grains with their natural sweetness and aroma preserved.
Excellent Heat Retention: The ceramic construction maintains warmth after cooking, allowing the rice to rest and finish steaming naturally.
Versatile Design: Ideal for preparing Japanese short-grain rice, as well as mixed rice dishes such as takikomi gohan.
Timeless Japanese Aesthetic: A beautifully functional cooking vessel that can be brought directly to the table.
Size:
5-Cup Rice Pot: Generously proportioned for larger households, entertaining and preparing rice for gatherings. Capacities refer to Japanese rice-cooker cups, approximately 180ml of uncooked rice per cup, rather than standard measuring cups.
How to Use:
Rinse Japanese short-grain rice gently until the water runs relatively clear. Drain and allow the rice to soak in the recommended quantity of fresh water before cooking.
Place the rice and cold water into the ceramic pot and cook over a suitable gas flame. Lines are marked inside the pot to indicate the appropriate water level for fluffy, delicious rice every time. When cooking for 5, cook on medium heat for about 15-17 minutes, then turn off the heat and let it boil/steam for 20 minutes. You can also use the microwave oven for warming should you need to. This rice pot cannot be used with IH cookers. Once cooked, allow the rice to rest with the lid in place so the remaining steam can distribute evenly through the grains. The pot also includes instructions in Japanese - please download the Google Translate app for an accurate translation.
Fluff gently using a traditional Japanese shamoji (rice paddle) and serve immediately.
The rice pot is particularly well suited to preparing gohan, the simple steamed white rice that forms the foundation of Japanese cuisine, as well as seasoned rice dishes and other traditional preparations.
About Misuzi Ceramic Inc. & Banko-yaki
Misuzi Ceramic Inc. is a Japanese ceramics manufacturer associated with the celebrated Banko-yaki pottery tradition of Mie Prefecture, a region renowned for its exceptional heat-resistant earthenware and beautifully functional cooking vessels.
The origins of Banko-yaki date to the 18th century, with the tradition developing into one of Japan's most recognised forms of practical ceramics. Particularly admired for its donabe cooking pots, Banko-yaki combines the natural character of clay with remarkable resistance to heat, making it ideally suited to cooking directly over a flame.
Japanese clay-pot cooking is deeply rooted in the appreciation of ingredients and the belief that thoughtful preparation enhances their natural qualities. Unlike conventional metal cookware, a ceramic rice pot heats gradually and retains warmth, creating the gentle cooking environment traditionally associated with beautifully prepared Japanese rice.
The Misuzi rice pot reflects this heritage - a considered balance of craftsmanship, functionality and timeless Japanese design, intended to be used and enjoyed for years.
Care Instructions:
Allow the pot to cool naturally before washing. Clean gently with warm water and a soft sponge, avoiding abrasive cleaners and harsh detergents.
As traditional ceramic cookware is sensitive to sudden temperature changes, never place a hot pot directly into cold water or onto a cold, wet surface.
Ensure the exterior and base are completely dry before heating. Allow the pot to dry thoroughly before storing to prevent moisture from remaining within the ceramic.
Avoid dropping or striking the pot against hard surfaces. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for initial seasoning, compatible heat sources and cooking times.
