Wooden Themed Peg Puzzles

Our wooden peg puzzles are a simple, satisfying first step into puzzle play. Each piece has its own peg to hold, so small hands can lift it out, look at what's underneath and work out where it goes back. Available  in themes, e.g. rooms of the house, animals, vehicles.

Because the pieces are chunky and the board shows the picture or shape underneath, children can start by simply lifting pieces out and gradually move on to matching them back. There's no timer or score, just a puzzle to explore at their own pace, again and again.

They belong in an OT-curated shop because they build skills quietly, through play that a child chooses to return to. They're screen-free, durable enough to pass on to a sibling or a friend, and a good first puzzle for many toddlers.

What the OT Says:

A peg puzzle is one of my favourite first puzzles because the peg does so much of the work. Lifting and placing a piece by its peg asks a child to use a controlled grasp, which depending on the size of the peg can be a whole-hand grip or a finger-and-thumb (pincer) grasp. Using these small movements repeatedly can support fine motor control, finger strength and wrist stability, which later feed into things like self-feeding, drawing and pencil grasp.

The puzzle also gives children something to work out. Looking at a piece, comparing it with the space on the board and turning it to fit supports hand-eye coordination, visual discrimination and visual perceptual skills such as noticing shape, size and orientation. Trial and error is part of the process, and I encourage adults to let children try, adjust and try again. That builds early problem-solving, persistence and working memory as they remember where a piece belongs.

Because peg puzzles usually have a theme, they're also a lovely language opportunity. Naming pieces, describing what's underneath and taking turns lifting a piece can support vocabulary, early communication and shared attention between child and adult. Where the pieces show a picture underneath, that visual cue can help a child feel successful and independent.

Every child approaches puzzles differently, and taking pieces out and simply exploring them is a valid way to play. One tip is to start with the pieces out and only one or two to replace, then build up as confidence grows. I recommend these peg puzzles for home, playgroups and clinical use.
