Wooden Ball Push

Some of the most meaningful moments in a child’s day are also the simplest. A ball disappears with a firm little push, and a moment later it rolls back into view. The Object Permanence Ball Push is built around that small moment of effort and surprise. It is one your little one will want to repeat again and again.

Each of the three brightly coloured wooden balls sits in a softly lined hole on the lid. Your child presses the ball down through the lining, it drops inside the box, and it rolls out onto the attached wooden tray. A little peg stops it within easy reach, ready to go again. The design is calm and uncluttered: natural wood, a red front panel and a smooth beechwood tray. It lets your child focus fully on the play itself, with no lights, sounds or batteries.

This is a Montessori-inspired educational material rather than a toy, designed to be used with an adult nearby. As skills grow, so does the play. Your child moves from pushing and watching, to naming colours, choosing which hole to use, and taking turns with you. It is beautifully made and built to last, so it can easily be passed on to younger siblings.

What the OT Says

Object permanence is the understanding that something still exists when you can no longer see it. It is one of the big cognitive leaps of early childhood. When a child pushes the ball out of sight and then watches it reappear in the tray, they are building that understanding through their own hands and eyes, not through being told. That early sense of “it’s still there” also underpins later skills like memory, anticipation and even coping with separation.

What makes this material special is the soft lining around each hole. The ball doesn’t simply drop through; your child has to push it, and that gentle resistance is therapeutically valuable. It gives proprioceptive input through the palms, wrists and arms, builds hand strength, and helps children learn to grade how much pressure a task needs. Positioning the ball over the hole and pressing it through also develops manipulative skills and a controlled, purposeful grasp. Steadying the box with one hand while pushing with the other can encourage early bilateral coordination.

Collecting the ball from the tray and carrying it back to the lid develops hand-eye coordination, and following the ball as it rolls out supports visual tracking and attention. Waiting for it to appear builds anticipation and early sustained focus. The repetition is the point: young children learn by doing the same thing many times, and each success gives them a small boost of confidence. The three colours also open up early language through naming, matching and turn-taking with a parent or sibling.

As an occupational therapist, I love materials like this because they let children lead their own learning. Every child will approach it in their own way and at their own pace. I would happily recommend the Object Permanence Ball Push for supervised home play with toddlers, and as a reliable resource in early intervention and therapy settings.
