Load-shedding-proof
The best Sunsynk inverters, batteries and solar borehole pumps in South Africa
For most homes, the Sunsynk 5kW 48V single-phase hybrid inverter from Sustainable is the sensible heart of a system. The outdoor-rated 8kW Lynks Pro is the one to stretch for, and Livecopper's wall-mount LFP battery is the storage to hang off either.
28 October 2026
This shelf is dominated by one brand and two sellers. Sustainable carries most of the Sunsynk inverter range plus a deep rack of Bundu Power solar pumps, and Livecopper brings a battery and a big three-phase machine. Prices sit close enough that the decision comes down to what the spec sheet promises rather than who is cheapest by a few hundred rand.
Two things drive the price of an inverter here: rated output in kilowatts, and whether the enclosure is built to live outside. Batteries are priced by usable kilowatt-hours. Pumps are priced by how far up a column of water they have to push. Work out your number first and the shopping gets simple.
None of these listings carry shopper ratings, so the case has to be made on specification and price against the rest of the field. Some listings are generous with numbers. Others are close to marketing copy and we say so.
Our pick

Sustainable
Sunsynk 5kW 48V Single Phase Hybrid Inverter
The default choice for a normal house that wants solar, battery backup and grid changeover handled by one box.
Five kilowatts is the size most South African households land on, and this is the cheapest route to a Sunsynk hybrid of that rating in the list. It sits near the bottom of the inverter pricing here while doing the same core job as machines costing twice as much: managing power between panels, batteries, grid and a generator, and releasing it when you need it.
The listing leans on marketing language more than numbers, which is a mark against it. But the 48V single-phase hybrid format is the most common configuration in the country, which means installers know it, and batteries at 51.2V from this and other brands are built to pair with it.
If you are buying one component and adding storage later, this is the component to buy.
Runner-up

Sustainable
Sunsynk 7.6KW 48V Rack Mount Hybrid Inverter
Nearly the same money as the top pick for half again the output, if a rack-mount unit suits your board.
On paper this is the better-value inverter of the two: 7600W rated AC and UPS output, 8360W maximum, two MPPT trackers taking up to 9880W of PV, and 190A of battery charge and discharge current. It is listed slightly below the 5kW.
Sustainable has published the full data table here rather than a sales pitch, which makes it easier to size an array against it. The catch is the form factor. A rack mount wants a rack, and that changes the install.
If you have the space and the headroom in your budget for the extra panels this inverter can actually use, take it over the 5kW.
The catch. The listing is a raw spec dump with no description of the enclosure rating or mounting, so confirm the install requirements before ordering.
Upgrade pick

Sustainable
Sunsynk Lynks Pro IP65 8kW 48V Single Phase Hybrid Inverter
For a bigger house or light commercial load, especially where the inverter has to go on an outside wall.
Eight kilowatts single phase, dual MPPT, support for both LiFePO4 and lead-acid, and an IP65-rated enclosure rated for indoor or outdoor installation. That last point matters in a country where the switchboard is often in a garage or on a stoep wall.
Sustainable also lists a plain 8kW Sunsynk hybrid at a good deal more money. Going by the listings, the Lynks Pro gives you the same rated output plus the sealed enclosure for less. Unless your installer has a specific reason to want the other model, this is the better buy of the two.
It costs noticeably more than the top pick, so only go here if the load genuinely calls for it.
The catch. The key features list is cut short in the listing, so the PV input ceiling and battery charge current are not stated.
Budget pick

Sustainable
Sunsynk Contour 1kW inverter 2kWh LiFePO4 Battery Mobile Power Station
The cheapest thing here that keeps something running, and the only one you can wheel to where the work is.
A 1kW pure sine wave inverter and a 2kWh LiFePO4 pack on a two-wheel trolley. The listing says a 100W appliance will run for 20 hours off it, which is the kind of plain arithmetic claim you can plan around.
It is less than half the price of the cheapest hybrid inverter on this shelf and needs no installer, no board work and no roof. For a cottage, a site office, a stall or a workshop with no supply, that is the whole argument.
Treat it as a power source, not a home system. It will not carry a house.
The catch. One kilowatt is a modest ceiling and 2kWh empties quickly under real load.
Also great

Livecopper
SunSynk Battery LFP Wall Mount 5.32kWh 51.2V
The storage to pair with any of the inverters above, and the only standalone battery on this shelf.
Sunsynk's 5.32kWh wall or floor mount LFP unit at 51.2V, which is the voltage the hybrid inverters here expect. The listing claims 100% depth of discharge, 6000 cycles and a five-year figure, and says it scales from 5.32kWh up to 42.56kWh by stacking units.
Buying the battery separately from Livecopper rather than taking a bundled kit gives you room to start with one and add as the budget allows. That flexibility is worth something, because storage is where the money goes.
It is the single most expensive line item most people will buy in this category, and the pricing reflects that.
The catch. The listing uses words like incredible and perfectly compatible without naming which inverters it has been certified against. Check compatibility with your specific unit.
What to look for
Size the inverter to your actual load, not your anxiety. Add up what you want running during an outage: lights, fridge, Wi-Fi, maybe a pump. Most households land between 5kW and 8kW. Going bigger costs real money up front and only pays back if you are also buying the panels and battery to feed it.
Check the enclosure rating if the inverter is going anywhere a hosepipe or a storm can reach. IP65 units cost more and are worth it outdoors. Indoors on a dry wall, you do not need to pay for the seal.
Match battery voltage to the inverter. Nearly everything here runs 48V nominal, 51.2V on the lithium side, which is the mainstream for residential in South Africa. Stacking identical units later is easier than mixing brands, so buy a battery from a range you can still get in three years.
For solar pumps, the number that matters is maximum head, the vertical distance the pump must lift water. Then flow rate. Then the panel count the controller needs, which is in the listing and is a real cost: a pump needing thirty 545W panels is a far bigger project than one needing two. These Bundu Power units carry a 12 month warranty and the listings note that submersible cable is not included.
