The best smartwatch to buy in South Africa, from running watches to budget trackers

The Garmin Forerunner 55 is the one most people should buy: real running features, the strongest rating on this shelf and a price well under the AMOLED crowd. The Amazfit T-Rex 3 is the better pick if you want battery and brightness over brand.

27 October 2026

Most smartwatch shopping goes wrong in the same way. People buy for the feature list, then wear the thing for daily steps, sleep and the odd 5km. The watch that suits that life costs a lot less than the one with dive ratings and offline maps.

So the first question is not which brand. It is how often you will actually press start on a workout, and how much you hate charging. Garmin and Amazfit tend to win on battery and sport tracking. Apple and Samsung win on notifications, apps and phone integration, and they want a charger most nights.

This shelf runs from a Samsung fitness band at the cheap end to a 51mm Fenix 8 that costs more than some laptops. The sweet spot sits in the middle, and the ratings back that up.

Our pick

Garmin Forerunner 55

Multiply Mall

Garmin Forerunner 55

4.8 (40)

For anyone who wants a proper GPS running watch without paying AMOLED prices, this is the sensible buy.

R 3 999,00See it

It carries the most convincing numbers here: 4.8 from 40 ratings, which is more feedback than anything else on this shelf by a wide margin. On a list where most products have two to five ratings, that counts for something.

The listing keeps its promises modest. GPS, time, distance, pace, heart rate, daily suggested workouts and built-in sports apps. That is the core of what a running watch does, and the rest of the Garmin range mostly adds display quality, maps and music on top of it.

Against the field it is cheap. The Forerunner 165 Music and Forerunner 70 both sit at roughly a third more, and the Forerunner 265 is well over double. If you are new to running, or returning to it, the 55 is where your money works hardest.

The catch. No AMOLED screen and no music storage, going by the listing. If a bright always-on display matters to you, step up.

Amazfit T-Rex 3 (48mm)

Amazfit South Africa

Amazfit T-Rex 3 (48mm)

4.9 (28)

Best for long battery life, outdoor use and anyone who wants a big bright screen without Garmin money.

R 4 999,00R 6 999,00See it

The spec sheet is loud but specific: over three weeks of typical battery, a 1.5 inch display at 2,000 nits, dual-band GPS with maps, waterproof to 100 metres and 170-plus sport modes. That combination normally costs a lot more.

Shoppers rate it 4.9 from 28 ratings, the second-strongest sample here and the highest score with real volume behind it. It is also currently well below its usual price, which makes it good value, though that is a reason to act rather than a reason to choose it.

Set against the Forerunner 55 it is a bigger, brighter, longer-lasting watch with far more modes. Set against Garmin generally, you trade a deeper training ecosystem for hardware. Plenty of people will take that trade.

The catch. At 48mm it is a large watch, and the 70 to -30 degree claim is marketing language you can safely ignore.

Budget pick

Samsung Galaxy Fit3 Watch - Pink Gold

New World

Samsung Galaxy Fit3 Watch - Pink Gold

4.8 (4)

The cheapest thing here that still does the daily job, for step counting, sleep and phone notifications.

R 1 299,00See it

A 1.6 inch AMOLED screen, IP68 rating and a quoted 13 days of use for the least money on this list. That is a fair deal if you want a wearable, not an athlete's tool.

It is a fitness band in a watch shape, and the listing does not claim GPS or sports depth. Know what you are buying and it holds up well, particularly if you are already on a Samsung phone and want the Galaxy connect experience the listing mentions.

The catch. Only four ratings, and the listing is thin. There is no mention of built-in GPS, so expect it to lean on your phone.

Runner-up

Amazfit Active Max – Built for an Active Life

Amazfit South Africa

Amazfit Active Max – Built for an Active Life

5.0 (4)

A middle-ground Amazfit for people who want maps, music and three weeks of battery at a mid-range price.

R 3 499,00See it

The listing promises AMOLED, built-in GPS, offline maps, music storage, 170-plus sports modes and a speaker, with around three weeks of battery. On paper that is close to the T-Rex 3 in a less rugged body, for meaningfully less.

It sits just above the Forerunner 55 in price and adds the screen and media features the Garmin does without. If the T-Rex 3's size or price puts you off, this is the version to look at.

The catch. A 5.0 average from only four ratings tells you very little. The claim that it is built for HYROX is a marketing line, not a feature.

Upgrade pick

Apple Watch Series 12 GPS 46mm Black Aluminium Case with Black Sport Band - M/L

Computer Mania

Apple Watch Series 12 GPS 46mm Black Aluminium Case with Black Sport Band - M/L

For iPhone owners who want the full Apple experience and will accept charging most days.

R 12 399,00See it

The listing is the most detailed of any here: a 2,000 nit LTPO OLED at 416 x 446, the S11 chip, Ceramic Shield 2, and a sensor list that runs from compass to always-on altimeter. It is a well specified piece of hardware and the depth of the spec sheet is itself a sign of a mature product.

It only makes sense on iPhone. If that is you, nothing else here will match it for notifications, apps and day-to-day phone integration.

The catch. Up to 24 hours of normal use, which means nightly charging, and it costs about triple the Forerunner 55. No shopper ratings yet.

What to look for

Decide whether you need built-in GPS. If you run, ride or hike and want distance recorded without carrying a phone, it is the one feature you should not compromise on. If you mostly want steps, sleep and notifications, a cheaper band does the job and you keep the money.

Battery life separates the camps more than anything else. Garmin and Amazfit quote days to weeks. Apple and Samsung quote a day or so, because they are running a far busier operating system. Neither is wrong, but a watch you resent charging is a watch in a drawer.

Check that the watch suits your phone. A Samsung watch on an iPhone, or an Apple Watch on Android, will cost you features. Amazfit and Garmin are the most phone-agnostic of the bunch.

Treat rating counts as seriously as rating scores. A 5.0 from two shoppers tells you almost nothing. A 4.8 from forty is worth leaning on. And remember straps and charging cables are proprietary, so buying locally means the replacement arrives in days rather than weeks.
