The best body butters, tissue oils and marula basics from South African sellers

Africology's Body Lotion is the one most people should buy: a big, consistently high rating and a sensible mid-range price. Below it sit a cheap marula tissue oil that does the daily work, and two splurges that earn their keep.

10 October 2026

This shelf splits three ways. There are the big tubs of body butter and lotion you reach for after a shower, the thin oils you smooth on afterwards, and a handful of face products with long bullet lists of promises. The prices run from less than a takeaway coffee to more than a tank of petrol, and the gap is not always about what is in the bottle.

Ratings are the most useful signal here, and they are spread unevenly. A few products carry hundreds or thousands of shopper ratings. Many of the Edgars-listed Portia M items carry one, two or four, which tells you almost nothing either way. We leaned towards the listings that have been bought and rated often, then checked the price against the rest of the field.

One more thing about the marketing. Nearly every listing on this page claims to brighten, firm, smooth, repair and calm. Treat those lists as ambition, not spec. What you can actually judge is size, stated ingredients, price per bottle and how many people came back to rate it.

Body Lotion

4.9 (837)

For most people wanting one good everyday body moisturiser, Africology's Body Lotion has the strongest rating record on this shelf at a price that does not frighten.

R 185,00See it

Eight hundred and thirty-seven ratings at 4.9 is the most convincing number in this category outside of a single imported serum. That is a lot of people buying a body lotion more than once, which is roughly the only thing you want to know about a body lotion.

The listing describes a lighter, silky lotion blended with essential oils and marula, rather than a heavy butter. That makes it the more practical daily choice for warm months and for anyone who dislikes sitting around waiting to dry off. It also costs a fraction of the same maker's butters.

Against the rest of the field it sits mid-range. Cheaper options exist and some are perfectly sensible, but nothing else near this price carries anything like the same weight of shopper feedback.

The catch. The listing is heavy on mood and light on detail. It does not state the bottle size, so you cannot work out what you are paying per millilitre.

Body Butter

Africology Skincare & Spa

Body Butter

4.9 (585)

For properly dry skin in winter, or anyone who wants the richest thing here, the cocoa and shea body butter is worth the step up.

R 480,00See it

This is the thick end of the range. The listing names cocoa and shea butter as the base, with canola oil, marula, rooibos, African potato and aloe extracts, which is more ingredient detail than most listings on this page offer.

The rating record backs it: 4.9 from 585 ratings, second only to the Body Lotion among local makers here. That is unusual for a product costing well over double the top pick.

Buy it if elbows, shins and heels are your problem. Buy the lotion if you just want something pleasant every morning.

The catch. Expensive, and the listing does not state the tub size, so the real value is hard to pin down.

Portia M Marula Tissue Oil, 200ml

Mopani

Portia M Marula Tissue Oil, 200ml

The cheapest sensible bulk option: a 200ml marula tissue oil for daily all-over use, currently sitting below its usual price.

R 114,90R 123,90See it

At 200ml this is the biggest bottle among the affordable oils, and the listing actually tells you something useful, naming marula and the omega 3, 6 and 9 profile, with clear morning and evening instructions. Many cheaper tissue oils on this shelf are a paragraph of adjectives and nothing else.

Our price history has it a little under its usual price at the moment, which is a bonus rather than a reason. The reason is the size-to-price maths, which beats everything else here that names its ingredients.

If you go through oil quickly, after the beach, after the bath, on the kids, this is the practical buy.

The catch. No shopper ratings yet, and the listing makes several appearance claims we would not take at face value.

Dermalogica Bio Lumin-C Serum

Dermalogica Bio Lumin-C Serum

4.7 (8699)

For someone who specifically wants a vitamin C face serum from a well-known brand, this is the only candidate here with a serious volume of ratings behind it.

R 2 199,00See it

Nearly nine thousand ratings at 4.7 is a different order of evidence from the four-rating face serums elsewhere in this list. If a vitamin C serum is the thing you came for, that track record counts.

The listing is short and factual: stable vitamin C and peptides, suitable for all skin types. No ingredient theatre.

It is also by a distance the most expensive item on this page, several times the price of the top pick. That is the brand, the category and the concentration all priced in.

The catch. Very expensive, it is an imported brand rather than a local maker, and the listing gives no bottle size.

What to look for

Work out what you are buying per millilitre before you compare anything. A 200ml tissue oil at double the price of a 100ml one is the same deal. Several listings here skip the size entirely, which is a fair reason to pick the one that tells you.

Match the texture to the problem. Lotions absorb fast and suit daily use in heat. Butters are thick and better for genuinely dry patches. Oils go on after a bath and are the cheapest way to cover a whole body. Buying a butter when you wanted a lotion is the most common waste of money on this shelf.

Treat long benefit lists as a warning sign rather than a feature. When one bottle claims to fix texture, tone, pores, lines, acne and dryness, the listing is doing marketing, not describing. Prefer the ones that name their ingredients and state how to use them.

Ratings count, but count the ratings. Four five-star reviews is one happy family. Several hundred at 4.8 or above means the product survives contact with ordinary shoppers. Where a product you like has almost no feedback, buy the smallest bottle first.

Africology's shimmer version of the body butter, 230ml and well rated at 4.9 from 522. A lovely idea if you want a subtle glow, but the shimmer narrows it to an occasion product.

  • Vanilla Body Butter

    Vanilla Body Butter · Africology Skincare & Spa · R 440,00

Vanilla Body Butter from the same maker, 4.8 from 277 ratings. A scent preference more than a different product, and it sits in the same high price bracket.

  • Tissue Oil 50ml

    Tissue Oil 50ml · Africology Skincare & Spa · R 450,00

A 50ml tissue oil with a detailed ingredient list and 223 ratings at 4.9. It is a small bottle at a serious price, so it only makes sense if you are treating specific spots rather than your whole body.

  • Marula Skin Oil

  • Bio-Clear Pure Tissue Oil, 200ml

    GlycoGlow 4-in-1 Glycerine + Tissue Oil 100ml · Cosmetic Connection · R 19,90

  • Portia M Marula Sunscreen Spf50 Transparent Spray

    Portia M Marula Sunscreen Spf50 Transparent Spray · Edgars · R 150,00

An SPF 50 marula spray at a reasonable price. Sunscreen is a real gap in most routines, but the listing is thin and it has no ratings, so we could not justify a pick.
