The best planters and houseplants from South African nurseries

Plantify's Moon Planter is the one most people should buy: handmade here, four sizes, and the lowest price on this shelf. For a patio that takes weather, pay up for Hertex HAUS's Halong.

13 October 2026

Two things decide whether a pot is worth buying. Whether it fits the plant you already own, and whether it can live where you want to put it. Most indoor ceramics have no drainage hole, which is fine if you treat them as a slipcover and leave the nursery pot inside. Outdoors is a different job, and that is where fibreglass and fibrestone earn their keep.

This shelf leans heavily on Plantify, a Cape Town urban nursery that makes most of its pots locally and sells the plants to go in them. Hertex HAUS brings the big outdoor pieces. Prices run from a few rand for a drip tray to more than most people spend on furniture for an oversized stone-look planter.

Ratings are sparse across the board, usually a handful per product, so we have weighed what the listings actually promise as much as the stars.

Our pick

Moon Planter - White

Plantify - Urban Nursery

Moon Planter - White

5.0 (2)

For the person potting up one or two houseplants indoors, this is the sensible buy: handmade locally, four sizes, and nothing to re-pot.

R 185,00See it

The listing is refreshingly clear about what it is. A classic rounded ceramic shape, made in South Africa, sold in four sizes so you can match whatever nursery pot you are hiding. The "pot plant in and go" line matters more than it sounds: no repotting means no mess and no risk to the plant's roots on day one.

It sits at the bottom of the price range here, level with the Flo and Beach planters and a fraction of what the outdoor fibreglass pots cost. Shoppers rate it top marks, though only a couple of them have.

If you are building a shelf of plants rather than making one statement, this is the pot to buy several of.

The catch. Only two ratings, and the listing doesn't say whether there is a drainage hole, so assume you'll be using it as a slipcover over a nursery pot.

Runner-up

Helia Planter - Jade

Plantify - Urban Nursery

Helia Planter - Jade

Near enough the same money as the top pick, with drainage and a drip tray, so it can go outside or in.

R 195,00See it

The Helia covers the gap the Moon leaves. Plantify's listing says it comes with drainage and is suited to outdoors, and includes a plastic drip tray for when you bring it in. Four sizes, same local manufacture, gloss jade finish.

Call it a slight premium over the Moon for a pot that works in two places instead of one. The trade is colour: jade gloss is a commitment in a way that plain white isn't.

The catch. No shopper ratings yet, and a glossy green pot won't suit every plant or every room.

Halong Planter

Hertex HAUS

Halong Planter

4.0 (2)

The one to buy for a patio or poolside, where ceramic indoor pots have no business being.

R 1 200,00See it

Hertex HAUS describes the Saigon range as fully outdoor, with drainage holes and a weather-proof composition including fibreglass. That last part is the real selling point: a large fibreglass pot can be shifted by one person, where the equivalent in concrete cannot.

It costs several times the top pick, which is the going rate for a proper outdoor planter. Within Hertex's own range it is the cheaper of the two Saigon styles, and it carries a middling rating from a very small number of shoppers.

Buy it if the pot is going to live in sun and rain for years. For a lounge corner, you are overpaying.

The catch. Rated four out of five by just two shoppers, and the listing doesn't state dimensions, so check the size before you commit.

Delicious Monster

Plantify - Urban Nursery

Delicious Monster

5.0 (2)

The green thing to buy if you want one plant that reads as a statement without demanding much.

R 245,00See it

Monstera deliciosa is the default urban jungle plant for good reason, and Plantify lists it as easy level with year-round green foliage. The listing is honest that the famous leaf holes develop over time rather than arriving with the delivery.

It costs about the same as a mid-range pot here, which makes a pot-and-plant pairing straightforward to budget for. There is a large version at roughly half again the price if you want height from the start.

The catch. Two ratings only, and the listing gives no pot size or plant height, so you are buying somewhat blind on scale.

Budget pick

Shrek Ears Plant

Plantify - Urban Nursery

Shrek Ears Plant

The cheapest green thing on the shelf, and an indigenous one, good for a windowsill or a small gift.

R 65,00See it

Crassula ovata 'Gollum' is a South African succulent, and the listing says so plainly along with the two nursery pot sizes it ships in, nine or thirteen centimetres. That detail alone puts it ahead of several pricier plant listings here.

Waterwise and low maintenance, going by the spec, which suits a sunny sill or a desk. At this price you can pair it with the top pick and still spend less than one outdoor planter.

The catch. No ratings, and it's small. Don't expect it to fill a corner.

What to look for

Decide first whether the pot goes inside or out. Indoor ceramics here mostly have no drainage hole, which is a feature if you slip the nursery pot inside and lift it out to water. Outdoor pots need drainage and a material that handles sun and rain, and the listings that say "fully outdoor" or "UV-resistant" are telling you something useful.

Match the pot to the nursery pot you already have, not to the plant's eventual size. Most of these ranges come in three or four sizes and the listings rarely give centimetres, so ask before you order if you are working to a tight spot. A pot that is slightly too big is easier to live with than one that is too small.

Weight is the quiet decider on anything large. Fibreglass and fibrestone blends are made to be shiftable by one person, which matters when you want to sweep behind a planter or chase the sun across a patio. Cement composites are sturdier and heavier, and they stay where you put them.

Height is cheaper than a bigger pot. A plant stand or a hairpin frame lifts a small plant into view for less than the cost of upsizing, and most of them fit a range of pot diameters. Buy the stand after the pot, not before.

  • Wooden Plant Stand

    Wooden Plant Stand · Plantify - Urban Nursery · R 225,00

Plantify's locally made wooden stand has the most ratings of anything here, all top marks, and comes in three sizes. It's a stand rather than a planter, so it didn't fit the main picks, but it's the obvious add-on.

  • Hairpin Plant Stand - Black

    Hairpin Plant Stand - Black · Plantify - Urban Nursery · R 525,00

A 60cm steel hairpin stand with a 21cm top diameter, the only listing on this shelf that gives real measurements. Costs more than twice the wooden stand, which is why it misses out.

  • Arizona Planter in Stone

    Arizona Planter in Stone · Hertex HAUS · R 3 200,00

Hertex HAUS's fibrestone Arizona, with oversized options and integrated drainage. The most expensive planter here and unrated, so it's a specialist buy for a large terrace.

  • Statue Planter in Salt

    Statue Planter in Salt · Hertex HAUS · R 2 200,00

A cement, sand and fibreglass Shapescape planter from Hertex, hand-finished and outdoor-indoor. Handsome, pricey, no ratings.

  • Basket - Sinan

    Basket - Sinan · Plantify - Urban Nursery · R 250,00

A handwoven palm leaf basket with a free drip tray, a warmer alternative to ceramic. Sizes vary slightly by nature of the weave, so it's a looser fit around a nursery pot.

  • Terrarium - Pentagon

    Terrarium - Pentagon · Plantify - Urban Nursery · R 495,00

A pentagon glass terrarium handcrafted in Cape Town, sold empty so you choose the plants. A project rather than a pot, and well above most planters here in price.

  • Propagation Vase

    Propagation Vase · Plantify - Urban Nursery · R 65,00

An Erlenmeyer flask propagation vase in five sizes, among the cheapest things on this shelf. Charming for cuttings, but it's not a planter.

  • Organic Potting Soil

    Organic Potting Soil · Plantify - Urban Nursery · R 55,00

Organic potting soil in 3L or 5L bags. Not a pick, but worth adding to any order where you're repotting rather than slipcovering.
