Smell the part

The best perfume to buy in South Africa right now

Lattafa's Khamrah Qahwa is the bottle we'd send most shoppers to: a full 100ml eau de parfum at one of the lowest prices on this shelf, with nearly 2 000 ratings behind it. Designer options earn their keep further up.

23 October 2026

Fragrance is the one category where the price gap between two bottles that both say eau de parfum can be six-fold. Part of that is the juice, part of it is the name on the box and the advertising budget behind it. Going by what the listings actually promise, the middle-eastern houses on this shelf give you the same 100ml spray and a comparable note pyramid for a fraction of the designer asking price.

That is the real split here. Rio Perfumes carries Lattafa, Maison Asrar, Armaf and Afnan at prices that sit well under a thousand rand. Edgars and Mopani carry the designer houses, where you are paying several times more. Both have a place. Neither is automatically the better buy.

The other thing worth sorting early: a perfume mist is not an eau de parfum. Several of the best-rated listings here are body mists and scented body creams, which are a different purchase with a different job. If you want a scent that lasts through a workday, buy the EDP.

Our pick

Lattafa Khamrah Qahwa 100ml Eau De Parfum

Rio Perfumes

Lattafa Khamrah Qahwa 100ml Eau De Parfum

4.7 (1943)

For most people who want a proper 100ml eau de parfum without spending designer money, this is the one to buy.

R 540,00See it

The numbers do a lot of the arguing. Khamrah Qahwa holds 4.7 from close to 2 000 ratings, which is far and away the deepest pool of feedback on any actual perfume here, and it sits near the bottom of the price range. Designer bottles on this shelf cost five or six times as much on a few dozen ratings.

The listing spells out the full structure rather than waving at a mood: ginger, cinnamon and cardamom up top, praline and candied fruit through the middle, coffee arabica in the base. That is a warm, sweet, spiced gourmand, and it is shared between men and women. If you already know you dislike sweet coffee-and-spice scents, this is not your bottle and no rating will change that.

It is a 100ml eau de parfum concentration, not a mist, so you are buying the same format as the expensive options.

The catch. Gourmand coffee scents are polarising and heavy in summer heat. Blind-buying a full 100ml of something this distinctive is a bigger commitment than it looks.

Budget pick

Lattafa Fakhar Femme 100ml Eau de Parfum

Rio Perfumes

Lattafa Fakhar Femme 100ml Eau de Parfum

4.8 (206)

The cheapest full-size EDP worth taking seriously, and the pick if you want a florals-first scent rather than a gourmand.

R 398,00See it

Fakhar Femme is the lowest-priced 100ml eau de parfum on this shelf that still comes with meaningful feedback: 4.8 from a couple of hundred ratings. That is a good showing for the money.

The note list is a classic white-floral build, with pomegranate and lily on top, a crowded heart of tuberose, gardenia, jasmine, ylang-ylang, rose and peony, then vanilla, ambroxan, sandalwood and musk underneath. Going by the spec it should read rich and traditionally feminine rather than fresh or clean.

Same maker and same size as our top pick, meaningfully cheaper. If you are buying a first bottle and are not sure of your taste yet, start here.

Yves Saint Laurent Y EDP Intense, 100ml

Mopani

Yves Saint Laurent Y EDP Intense, 100ml

4.7 (57)

For someone who specifically wants a designer men's fragrance on the shelf, with the bottle and the name that go with it.

R 3 055,00See it

Y EDP Intense sits at about five to six times the price of our top pick, and what you are buying for that is the house, the presentation and the designer formulation rather than more millilitres. It is the same 100ml.

Shopper feedback is solid at 4.7, though from well under a hundred ratings. Among the designer bottles here it is one of the better-priced routes in, well below the Creed and Gucci options.

It is also our one Mopani pick, which is worth knowing if you are already ordering from them.

The catch. The listing is thin. It gives you the size and a lot of advertising copy, and no note breakdown at all, so you are buying on reputation rather than on stated detail.

Goddess Eau de Parfum

Edgars

Goddess Eau de Parfum

4.9 (450)

Best here if vanilla is the whole point for you and you want a designer bottle to match.

R 3 220,00See it

Burberry Goddess is built almost entirely on vanilla, by the maker's own account: a vanilla infusion with woody tones, a vanilla caviar heart and a vanilla absolute base, with lavender cutting through. The listing also states a vegan formula. That is unusually clear for a designer listing and it tells you exactly what you are getting.

It carries 4.9 from around 450 ratings, which is the strongest rating-and-volume combination among the designer fragrances on this shelf by a wide margin.

It is one of the two most expensive picks here, roughly six times our top pick. Buy it because you want this specific vanilla, not because the price signals quality.

The catch. Near the top of the price range, and single-note-concept scents like this can wear thin if vanilla is not already your thing.

What to look for

Check the concentration and the size before the price. Eau de parfum at 100ml is the standard full bottle and what most of these picks are. A perfume mist is lighter and typically a layering product, and a scented body cream is a body cream. All three can smell lovely. They are not interchangeable buys.

Read the note pyramid, not the story. Most listings open with a paragraph about confidence, freedom or self-discovery, and that tells you nothing. The top, heart and base notes do. Top notes are what you smell in the shop, base notes are what you live with for the rest of the day, so judge a bottle mostly on the base.

Rating volume matters more than the rating itself. A 5.0 from two ratings is noise; a 4.7 from nearly 2 000 is a signal. On a shelf like this, the older, more widely sold bottles are the safer blind buys, and the brand-new releases with a handful of ratings are the gamble.

Decide whether you are paying for juice or for a name, then make peace with your answer. The middle-eastern houses here deliver full-size eau de parfum at a fraction of designer prices, and the note structures are often comparable on paper. Designer bottles bring the house, the presentation and a scent you may already know you like. Both are legitimate reasons to spend. Pretending the cheaper bottle is somehow lesser because it costs less is not.

  • Maison Asrar DXB 100ml EDP

    Maison Asrar DXB 100ml EDP · Rio Perfumes · R 599,00

Maison Asrar DXB, a citrus aromatic with mandarin, bergamot, ginger and grapefruit, rated 4.9 from over 700. Strong contender and the one to buy if you want something fresh for hot weather; it only missed because our top pick has nearly three times the ratings at a lower price.

  • Lattafa Ameer Al Oudh 100ml EDP Intense oud

Lattafa Ameer Al Oudh 100ml EDP Intense oud · Rio Perfumes · R 350,00

Lattafa Ameer Al Oudh is the cheapest EDP here and the only straight oud, but 4.4 from 25 ratings is the weakest showing of the Lattafa bottles.

  • Afnan 9PM Elixir Intense 100ml EDP

    Afnan 9PM Elixir Intense 100ml EDP · Rio Perfumes · R 830,00

Afnan 9PM Elixir Intense sits mid-range with no ratings at all, and the listing describes mood rather than notes. Too little to go on.

  • Armaf Club De Nuit Overdose 100ml EDP

    Armaf Club De Nuit Overdose 100ml EDP · Rio Perfumes · R 1 100,00

Armaf Club de Nuit Overdose has two ratings. Interesting on paper, but there is no feedback worth leaning on and it costs double our top pick.

  • Aventus Cologne 100ml

    Aventus Cologne 100ml · Edgars · R 6 499,00

Creed Aventus Cologne is the most expensive bottle on the shelf by some distance, on 4.6 from 16 ratings. A known name, but a very large sum against very little feedback.

  • Oud Intense Pour Homme Eau de Parfum 90ml

    Oud Intense Pour Homme Eau de Parfum 90ml · Edgars · R 3 245,00

Gucci Oud Intense Pour Homme holds a perfect score from 84 ratings, which is genuinely good, but the listing arrives mangled with stray code and gives almost no usable detail for the price.

  • Cheirosa 62 Perfume Mist

    Cheirosa 62 Perfume Mist · Edgars · R 915,00

Cheirosa 62 Perfume Mist, the pistachio and salted caramel one, is well rated and much loved. It is a mist rather than an eau de parfum, so it is a layering buy, not a signature bottle.

  • Her Parfum

    Her Parfum · Edgars · R 1 495,00

Burberry Her Parfum is the brand's most concentrated version, with cherry, amber and vanilla. Only four ratings so far, which is not enough at this price.
