The best earbuds, headphones and speakers to buy from South African sellers
The soundcore P31i is the pair most people should buy: active noise cancelling, LDAC and thousands of happy shoppers for well under a thousand rand. We also pick a cheaper set, a Sony alternative, a pair of bookshelf speakers and one proper splurge.

Audio is the category where the listing does most of the talking, so the job is working out which promises actually matter. Battery hours, water resistance and whether the thing pairs to two devices at once are checkable. Terms like immersive and studio-grade are not.
This shelf leans heavily towards true wireless earbuds, with Anker's soundcore brand and Sony's C and N series covering nearly every price point between them. Edifier South Africa supplies almost all the actual speakers, from a small portable box to a 256W tower of a desktop system. There is also a soundbar and a party speaker for anyone furnishing a room rather than a commute.
Prices for identical products move between stores here, sometimes by a lot. Check the model number, not the marketing name, before you pay.
Our pick

Dress Your Tech
soundcore P31i ANC TWS - White (D1202Z21)
4.9 (2507)For most commuters: cheap earbuds with real noise cancelling and the biggest pile of good ratings on this shelf.
The numbers are hard to argue with. A 4.9 average from more than 2 500 shoppers is the strongest signal in this category by a distance, and the price sits near the bottom of the field. Nothing else here combines the two.
Going by the listing, you get adaptive active noise cancelling rated up to 52 dB, LDAC support for higher-bitrate streaming from Android, and six microphones with AI noise reduction for calls. That is a feature set normally quoted at two or three times the money. The listing also mentions on-device translation, which is the sort of thing to treat as a bonus rather than a reason to buy.
Dress Your Tech sells it alongside the V20i open-ear pair at the same price, which makes the choice simple: take the P31i unless you specifically need to hear traffic.
The catch. ANC at this price is noise reduction, not silence, and the listing does not state an IP water-resistance rating.
Runner-up

Sony World -ZA
Sony WF-C710N Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones
4.1 (8)If you want Sony's noise cancelling and app in a small bud, and the P31i is out of stock.
The WF-C710N covers the same ground: active noise cancelling, ambient mode, 8.5 hours in the bud and 30 hours all in. Sony's Headphones Connect app gives you EQ and mode control, which is a meaningful part of what you are paying for.
Price is where this gets interesting. Sony World ZA lists the same WF-C710N at roughly half what FirstShop asks for the blue and white versions of it. Same model, same features. Buy the cheaper one.
At that price it undercuts most of the Sony earbuds here, including the older C700N, while offering newer kit.
The catch. Only eight ratings so far, and a 4.1 average is the softest score among the picks.
Budget pick

Computer Mania
Soundcore P20i True Wireless Earbuds White
4.8 (468)The cheapest thing here worth owning, and a sensible pair to keep in a gym bag.
Under three hundred rand buys 10mm drivers, IPX5 water resistance, Bluetooth 5.3 and a quoted 10 hours per charge with 30 total from the case. The case has a lanyard loop, which sounds trivial until you have hunted for earbuds at the bottom of a backpack.
A 4.8 average across 468 ratings says shoppers are getting what they expected. There is no noise cancelling, so the P31i is still the better buy if you travel or work in an open-plan office. For everyone else this is plenty.
The catch. No ANC and no premium codec support mentioned, so it is a basic listening pair.
Also great
Earbuds are for moving. If the sound is staying in one room, a pair of active speakers does far more for the money. The R1700BTs are self-powered with Bluetooth and a sub output, so you plug them in, pair a phone, and add a subwoofer later if you want more bottom end.
Edifier's listing is about as thin as listings get, one line, but 199 shoppers have rated it 4.9, which is the best-supported score among all the speakers here. Price sits mid-pack: more than the small R990BT, less than the R2000DB.
If your space is a desk rather than a room, the M60 from the same store is the compact alternative at a similar price.
The catch. The listing gives no power rating, driver sizes or dimensions, so measure your shelf before ordering.

New World
Sony WH-1000XM6 Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones - Blue
4.3 (3)For frequent flyers and people who want the quietest over-ear headphones on this shelf, if the budget stretches.
Sony's 1000X line is the reference point for travel noise cancelling, and the XM6 is the current model: 30 hours quoted, a folding hinge for the case, and the heaviest signal processing Sony puts in a consumer headphone.
It is currently sitting a fifth below its usual price here, which is worth knowing but is not the reason to buy. The reason is that it lands well below the white XM5 listed at the same store, which is the older model at a higher price. Between those two, the XM6 is the obvious choice.
If you want most of the effect for a fraction of the outlay, the Edifier WH950NB Gen 2 offers Hi-Res ANC over-ears at a fraction of the price with 28 ratings behind it.
The catch. Easily the most expensive pick here, and only three shoppers have rated it so far.
What to look for
Decide first whether you want to block the world out or stay aware of it. Closed earbuds with ANC are for aeroplanes, taxis and open-plan offices. Open-ear and clip-on designs leak sound and cancel nothing, but you hear a car coming. Buying the wrong shape is the most common and most expensive mistake in this category.
Read the battery number twice. Makers quote the bud figure and the with-case figure in the same breath, and the second one is just the case recharging the first. Eight to eleven hours in the bud is the real measure of whether you can get through a workday. The same trick applies to headphones, where quoted hours usually assume noise cancelling is switched off.
Treat decibel figures, driver sizes and codec names as context rather than proof. LDAC and Hi-Res badges tell you the hardware can carry more data; they do not tell you the tuning is good. Shopper ratings in volume are a better guide, so weigh a 4.8 from hundreds of people above a 5.0 from two.
For anything that lives at home, powered speakers beat a Bluetooth box. You get stereo separation, a proper mains supply and usually a line input for a turntable or TV. And buy from a seller with a local warranty you can actually phone, because drivers and batteries are the parts that fail.
