Black Friday, watched
Every November the discounts arrive. Some are cut from a price that went up in October. We have recorded every local price we list, every day, since June, so we can judge a Black Friday sticker against what the thing cost before the run-up began, not against the number it was cut from.

Some of these are sales ending rather than prices being raised: a special that was running in September reads as a rise when it stops. Rises beyond 100% are left out for that reason; at that size it is almost always a long clearance price reverting. Either way, a Black Friday sticker cut from this number is cut from a higher one than the shop was asking a month ago.

How we judge it
Prices we saw ourselves, nothing else
A product’s usual is the middle of the prices we recorded for it before 1 October. We need at least 5 of them before we say anything, and a sweep must have confirmed today’s price within the last week.
Up means the price has been at least 5% above that usual since the run-up began. Raised, then cut means it went up, then came down by at least 5%, and still is not below the usual. Real drop means it is at least 5% below the usual, whatever happened in between.
We say “up on its usual”, not more: we cannot see why a price moved, only that it did. Every seller here is a verified South African shop, and every price is one we recorded on the day.
